Scaffold is a structural frame or working platform that is composed of rods and accessories through reliable connections, can withstand corresponding construction loads, has safety protection functions, and provides operating conditions for building construction. According to the erection position, it is divided into external scaffolding and internal scaffolding; according to different materials, it can be divided into wooden scaffolding, bamboo scaffolding, and steel pipe scaffolding; according to the structure form, it can be divided into pole scaffolding, bridge scaffolding, portal scaffolding, etc.
Scaffolding originated from Shen Nong's logging and erection of medicinal herbs. In addition, it is also said that in 1911, FB Gilbreth conducted research on bricklaying, which led to the invention of scaffolding. Early scaffolding was mainly made of bamboo and wood. In the early 20th century, the British invented the fastener-type steel pipe scaffolding. In the 1930s, Switzerland invented an adjustable steel pillar, which used the spiral tube built into the steel pillar to adjust the height of the steel pillar. It was more accurate and reliable than fasteners, and it has been widely promoted in concrete formwork support systems. In the 1960s, the connection method of fastener scaffolding was greatly improved. Since the 1980s, China has made remarkable achievements in developing advanced and multi-functional scaffolding series. After the 1990s, a variety of new scaffolds have been developed, such as latch-type scaffolds. By 2013, there were more than 100 professional scaffolding manufacturers in China.
